    Turtle Season

Thursday, June 5, 2008, 08:26 PM EST [General]

Well, Turtle season has started here on our property. Painted turtles migrate from the pond up onto our property to lay eggs. This is an annual event here, but never have we found 3 turtles together laying eggs. We usually mark the nests with a flag or a stake, to make sure that we don't run them over with the tractor or mowers. Personally, we have never seen a nest hatch. Although they must in order to keep up the population here.

Snappers prefer the pond area to lay their eggs, so we don't see them as much. When we do, they get a wide birth. They bite!!!!!! Some of the larger snappers can take off fingers and toes. As well as make meals out of the baby geese and ducklings. This year I think the ducks have giving up on making their nests near the pond. Tired of losing babies.......The geese however, remain stubborn. We'll see how many survive this year.
